About Program

Welcome to the Department of Optometry at DIT University, offering a comprehensive 4-year program with a mandatory one-year internship designed to equip students with the knowledge and clinical skills needed to excel in the field of primary vision care. The B.Sc. in Optometry (B.Optom) trains students to become vital players in the healthcare sector, particularly in eye care and vision correction, with the ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent visual impairments and eye diseases.

The B.Sc. in Optometry program at DIT University focuses on preparing students to address one of the most pressing health concerns—vision impairment. In India, around 456 million people require vision correction, and an estimated 133 million suffer from vision impairment due to the lack of eye examinations and appropriate corrective lenses. Optometry, as a healthcare profession, plays a crucial role in reducing the burden of vision-related issues, providing essential services like prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing eye diseases, and offering visual rehabilitation. The program also covers the detection of serious eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, as well as broader health conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical experience. Students are trained in optical sciences, contact lenses, visual optics, ocular diseases, binocular vision, and low vision care. The mandatory one-year internship ensures that students receive practical training in real-world settings especially in eye hospitals, allowing them to apply their skills in diagnosing and managing various vision and eye health conditions.

Career Opportunity

Career Prospects

  • Graduates of the B.Optom program can pursue careers in a variety of sectors, including private practice, hospitals, optical chains, corporate sectors, public health organizations, educational and research institutions. As primary eye care providers, optometrists are trained to manage patient care, provide low vision services, co-manage with ophthalmologists, and conduct vision screenings. Graduates may also engage in public health initiatives, participate in epidemiological studies, or work with NGOs to deliver eye care services.
  • The demand for optometrists is rising globally, and graduates have strong employment prospects not only in India but also internationally, where their qualifications are highly regarded. Further opportunities include roles in pharmaceutical companies, lens manufacturers, and eye care technology firms, offering career advancement into leadership roles such as clinical heads or regional managers. They are also often employed in leading technology companies working on developing augmented and virtual reality devices.

Global Importance of Optometry

Vision impairment is a significant global health issue, with 85% of all vision impairments and 75% of blindness being preventable or treatable with proper care. In India, the economic burden due to uncorrected refractive errors and vision impairment amounts to $23 billion annually, affecting productivity and quality of life. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) launched the VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative, aiming to eliminate avoidable blindness.

Optometrists, as primary eye care providers, are central to this initiative by addressing the leading cause of avoidable vision impairment—uncorrected refractive error.

The optometry profession in India is growing, with an estimated need for 16,000 optometrists to meet the country’s demand, yet currently, only 9,000 optometrists with formal 4-year training are available. This gap highlights the critical role optometrists will play in future healthcare systems, making it a highly in-demand profession with excellent job prospects.
