Global Importance of Optometry

Vision impairment is a significant global health issue, with 85% of all vision impairments and 75% of blindness being preventable or treatable with proper care. In India, the economic burden due to uncorrected refractive errors and vision impairment amounts to $23 billion annually, affecting productivity and quality of life. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) launched the VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative, aiming to eliminate avoidable blindness.

Optometrists, as primary eye care providers, are central to this initiative by addressing the leading cause of avoidable vision impairment—uncorrected refractive error.

The optometry profession in India is growing, with an estimated need for 16,000 optometrists to meet the country’s demand, yet currently, only 9,000 optometrists with formal 4-year training are available. This gap highlights the critical role optometrists will play in future healthcare systems, making it a highly in-demand profession with excellent job prospects.
