Green and Sustainable Chemistry

Area - 1 (Green and Sustainable Chemistry)

Members: Dr. Naveen Singhal, Dr. Suheel Kumar Porwal, Dr. Anita Bhatia, Dr. Sanjeev Saini

The research group is actively engaged in the Green Chemistry projects under the theme Waste to Wealth as waste biomass valorization. Research continues to span the fields of organic, organometallic and coordination chemistry with a specific focus on Ru catalysed organic transformations in aqueous and biphasic medium. Green chemistry is a unique platform for alternative approaches and sustainable development of future science and technology. The diversified strategies have been developed from renewable/waste biomass. The activities carried out in this group also focused on the development of functionalized peptides and their applications towards catalysis and sensing in an eco-friendly manner. Sustainable methodologies have been developing for the facile synthesis of biologically important heterocyclic moieties using Green Chemistry principles.

Computational Chemistry

Area - 2 (Computational Chemistry)

Members: Dr. Manas Ranjan Dash, Dr. Ashish Khanna, Dr. Anmol Singh

The primary goal of research is to measure the kinetic parameters of the reactions of VOCs compounds with the oxidizing agents. To validate the experimentally measured data, computational calculations must be carried out using Density functional theory (DFT) and high-level ab-initio methods. Development of novel photocatalytic material which is cost-effective for particular applications is a very challenging task. Also, above approaches such as DFT and Molecular Dynamics simulations are helping to derive particular catalytic mechanism for specific reaction. We actively collaborate with various national and international renowned institutions/universities from India, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and Germany.

Environmental Chemistry

Area - 3 (Environmental Chemistry)

Members: Dr. Naveen Singhal, Dr. Jabrinder Singh, Dr. Manas Ranjan Dash

Main areas of research interests are Sustainable Ecological Approaches in Resource Management Environment Pollution Control. Biodiversity Conservation. Natural resource deterioration at peak and ambient air water quality is hazardous. Anthropogenic disasters pose threat to social, economic ecological habitats. SDG’s needs to be implemented at globally with grass root approach at regional level. Assessment of water resources through spatio-temporal monitoring and Evaluation of air quality. Develop sustainable methods for socio-ecological restoration. To increase the resilience of socio-ecological systems; we have to adopt sustainable technologies in natural resource conservation pollution abatement. It becomes need of the hour to cope with disasters through ecosystem restoration reconciling harmonious relationship with nature.

Area - 4 (Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry)

Members: Dr. Manisha Duseja, Dr. Suheel Kumar Porwal

The research group is involved in Natural Product Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry. It involves the extraction of secondary metabolites synthesised by the plants as a measure for self-defense against pests, insects, pathogens, herbivores, UV exposure and environmental hazards. It majorly includes Phytochemistry, which takes into account the structural composition of the metabolites, biosynthetic pathways, functions, mechanisms of actions in the living systems and their medicinal, industrial, and commercial applications. Pharmacognosy is used to screen, characterize, and produce new drugs for the treatment of human diseases.

Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry
Carbohydrate Chemistry and Drug Delivery

Area-5 (Carbohydrate Chemistry and Drug Delivery)

Members: Dr. Ashish Khanna and Dr. Anmol Singh

Carbohydrate chemistry and Bioconjugation plays a crucial role in the realm of drug delivery, as carbohydrates serve as versatile biomolecules with unique properties and bioconjugation of proteins with water insoluble drugs using peptide bonds, ester bonds and disulphide bonds makes the carrier moiety responsive to stimuli enabling targeted delivery. Glycans, such as sugars and polysaccharides, are frequently employed in drug formulations due to their biocompatibility and low toxicity. The design of carbohydrate-based drug delivery systems often focuses on exploiting specific interactions between carbohydrates and biological receptors, facilitating targeted delivery to desired cells or tissues. Moreover, advancements in bioconjugation have led to the development of glycosylated drug carriers, biopolymers and liposomes enhancing the stability and pharmacokinetics of therapeutic agents. This synergy between carrier moiety chemistry and drug delivery opens avenues for the creation of efficient and targeted drug delivery platforms with potential applications in personalized medicine and improved treatment outcomes.

The Department of Chemistry provides undergraduate research facilities in a diverse array of fields, including Green & Sustainable Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Natural Products, Medicinal Chemistry, and Bio-signalling, which greatly aids students in developing their understanding of concepts, problem-solving skills and competencies in critical thinking. Additionally, it encourages creativity and research process comprehension while providing students with the chance to choose several career paths and acquire new abilities that enhance their resumes. The Department of Chemistry encourages all students to participate in research on some level, in accordance with the university's philosophy. Students' involvement in research projects supports in the growth and expansion of their intellectual independence. We believe there is something for everyone by giving undergraduates multiple opportunity to participate in a variety of research topics.
